Our Curriculum

At Stoke St Gregory Church of England Primary School, our curriculum is designed with the holistic development of our students at its core. We believe in creating a learning environment that is relevant, engaging, and meaningful for every child. Our curriculum is built upon the following principles:

  1. Explicit Values: We explicitly teach the core values that are important to our school community. This helps to develop well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also morally and ethically grounded.

  1. Relevance and Purpose: We ask, "Who is it for?" to ensure our curriculum meets the needs and interests of our students. By making learning relevant, we foster a deeper connection and engagement with the material.

  1. Spiritual Development: Our curriculum nourishes children’s spiritual development by providing opportunities for reflection, awe and wonder.

  1. Narrative Approach: Understanding that children remember more when learning is presented as a story, we integrate narrative techniques across subjects. This approach not only enhances knowledge acquisition but also makes learning more enjoyable and relatable.

  1. Less is More: We prioritise quality over quantity. By focusing on essential content and eliminating unnecessary elements, we ensure that what we teach is taught well. This principle allows us to delve deeper into topics, providing a richer learning experience.

  1. Balance of Knowledge and Skills: Our curriculum strikes a balance between imparting knowledge and developing skills. We believe that both are crucial for the overall development of our students, preparing them for future academic and life challenges.

  1. Cognitive Science Principles: We incorporate cognitive science principles to reduce cognitive load and support retention of knowledge. Our teaching strategies are designed to help children remember and apply what they learn effectively.

  1. Value Knowledge: We value knowledge that is specific, well-sequenced, and taught to be remembered. Our curriculum is carefully structured to build upon prior learning, ensuring a coherent and cumulative educational experience.

  1. Flexibility: We recognise the importance of flexibility in our curriculum. This allows us to adapt to the diverse needs of our students and the ever-changing educational landscape as well as taking advantage of the many opportunities that present themselves during the school year

  1. Local Context: Our curriculum is enriched by the history, geography, and community of our local area. By incorporating local context, we make learning more relevant and meaningful for our students.

  1. Community Engagement: We believe in the power of community. Our curriculum brings the community into the school and extends the school into the community. This reciprocal relationship enhances learning and fosters a sense of belonging and responsibility.

  1. Adaptability: We are committed to adapting our curriculum to meet the evolving needs of our students and society. This ensures that our educational approach remains dynamic and responsive.

  1. Big Ideas and Concepts: Our curriculum is built around big ideas and concepts that provoke curiosity and enquiry. We encourage students to explore, question, and think critically about the world around them.

At Stoke St Gregory Church of England Primary School, our curriculum is more than just a collection of subjects; it is a carefully crafted journey that prepares our students for the future while instilling a love for learning and a sense of community.

Curriculum Domains

Working in collaboration with other schools in The Oak Partnership Trust, we have organised traditional subjects into curriculum domains.  Each domain is led by a member of the teaching team at the school, and these leaders develop and make improvements to their domains with support from Trust Domain Leaders. The subjects within each domain have a carefully structured progression of knowledge and skills from which lesson planning is informed.
